GreenCollar's Smallholder Reforestation

ESIA services

Green Pines

Malawi continues to lose forest cover at an alarming rate due to unsustainable land use, charcoal demand, and agricultural expansion. This deforestation weakens soils, reduces water retention, and threatens community livelihoods, particularly for smallholder farmers.

Matex International is proud to provide Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Baseline Services for the ARR Project for GreenCollar

The afforestation project aims to reduce pressure on existing forests in Malawi’s Northern and Central regions by integrating smallholder woodlots into local community practices. It will restore degraded land through tree planting, build landholder capacity to manage planted forests and nurseries, and provide alternative income sources for participating community members.

The project will be implemented in Mzimba District across the following Traditional Authorities: Mzikubola, Mtwalo, Kampingo Sibale, Maulabo, Nyaluanga, and Khonsolo.

The Project

Green Collar, in partnership with Ripple Africa, is implementing one of Malawi’s most ambitious smallholder-driven afforestation initiatives. The project supports thousands of rural households to restore degraded land, increase climate resilience, and generate sustainable long-term income through carbon farming.

GreenCollar

GreenCollar is one of Australia’s largest environmental market investors and project developers. We help farmers, graziers, traditional owners and other land managers to identify and create commercial opportunities through nature-based projects that enhance their productive agricultural enterprise while caring for the environment and delivering tangible social and economic benefits.

We work with land managerscorporatesgovernmentresearch organisations, traditional owners and other stakeholders  to create methodologies and markets that place the environment on the balance sheet to deliver financial and environmental benefits.

Green Collar and Ripple Africa are committed to developing an Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) Project that not only generates carbon credits but also delivers tangible environmental and social benefits. The project will contribute to the enhancement of local biodiversity, improvement of soil quality, and the strengthening of livelihoods within the local community.
