Upgrading 4 TEVET Colleges under Zantchito Programme – Malawi

The Zantchito Programme, implemented by UNOPS, is a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing technical and vocational education and training (TEVET) in Malawi. The project focuses on upgrading four TEVET colleges to improve skills development, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities for young people in critical sectors such as construction, energy, and tourism.

KEY OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

  • Improve infrastructure and learning facilities in four TEVET institutions.

  • Enhance practical and technical skills for youth employment.

  • Support the Malawi 2063 vision of a self-reliant and inclusive economy.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguards for sustainable development.

Environmental & Social Impacts

Matex International conducted an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and developed Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) to ensure:

  • Sustainable Construction Practices: Assessing and mitigating potential environmental impacts, including resource use, waste management, and emissions control.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Consultation: Engaging communities, students, and local authorities to address concerns and foster project ownership.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Aligning project activities with Malawi’s environmental regulations and UNOPS sustainability guidelines.
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Identifying social and environmental risks, proposing mitigation strategies, and integrating health and safety measures.
  • Monitoring & Reporting: Establishing frameworks for continuous environmental and social monitoring throughout project implementation.
