SAVING THE PLANET THROUGH ACTIVE REFURBISHING AND REPURPOSING E-WASTE

Matex International intends to establish an electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) storage, refurbishing, and repurposing facility in Lilongwe, area 38, to address the growing e-waste burden in Malawi. Matex is a private limited company dedicated to providing environmental and social solutions to communities, is incorporated under the Business Names Registration Act of Malawi (CAP 46.02) and registered with the Malawi Environmental and Protection Authority (MEPA).

It is essential to establish e-waste management facility that will help to protect both the environment and public well-being by curbing the improper disposal of e-waste and fostering responsible waste management practices. Moreover, it provides an avenue to champion the principles of a circular economy, as reusing and repurposing e-waste significantly reduces the demand for virgin resources, aligning with sustainable development objectives.

Project Impact

The facility will play a vital role in conserving natural resources and safeguarding public health through improved e-waste management practices. Promoting re-use of electronic devices will result in reduced reliance on virgin materials, addressing the challenge of over-exploitation of natural resources. Furthermore, it will actively contribute to the preservation of landfill space by minimizing the indiscriminate dumping of e-waste. These initiatives align with the facility’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices, fostering a positive impact on both the environment and the community’s well-being.
