Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Infrastructure for Improved Health and Livelihood (SRWSIHL) project

Through the Ministry of Water and Sanitation in partnership with Matex International Limited, the government of Malawi implemented the Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Infrastructure for Improved Health and Livelihood (SRWSIHL) project with funding from African Development Bank (AfDB). The five-year project had a total of USD 35.5 million and was implemented in five districts of Malawi namely, Rumphi, Nkhotakota, Ntcheu, Mangochi and Phalombe. The role of the Matex was to conduct Environmental and Social Compliance Audit on rehabilitation and expansion of gravity-fed schemes and construction of sanitation facilities in public institutions such as schools, hospitals and markets.

Project Impact

The project will improve social economic growth through provision of sustainable water supply and improved sanitation in rural areas of Malawi. The rehabilitation and expansion of gravity-fed schemes will improve food security both at individual and national levels, and construction of sanitation facilities in public institutions will help prevent communicable diseases which in turn maintain good health of people hence increasing national’s productivity.
